System Requirements:
Windows or Macintosh computer or Virtual Machine with genuine Microsoft Excel 97 or newer. 512MB RAM or more. 100MHz processor or faster. (Basically you need to use Microsoft Excel and a computer that can run it.)

    Mecca, your download for Ballistic_XLR is not there. You have PRS instead.

    I don’t understand the PRS model. With negative altitudes, looks like I will be shooting underwater. Is there someplace where you explain the density altitude approach.

      Actually it’s there. It’s filename is ballistics_8.17.xls. For PRS version you need a Kestrel 3500 or higher or another device that can determine Density Altitude. If you still can’t find it, please email and I’ll email you a copy. Note file size is about 12MB so your email provider will need to allow email attachments of that size. Ping me if you continue to have trouble finding the file. It’s the one that’s an Excel file which does NOT have PRS in the name.

        Thank you for a great write up. I’m wating for a ER-25 myself and cant wait, seems like an awesome scope. You seemed to be a bit “unhappy” with it, at least not over the top. Was that because of the out of the box RMA? I was also going to buy the XRT rings, but now im not so sure since they block the turrets. Do you still think they are a good match for the ER-25? If you change them out for lower rings, what rings will you be looking at?

        The ER-25 is a fantastic scope and I’m super happy with it overall. The instant RMA was very frustrating but it’s my first problem with USO kit so I’m not going to hold it against them.

        For rings, depends on your mounting base but the medium height XTR’s may be ok on top of a 20MOA base and still clear the barrel with a sunshade attached. My elevation turret would be more visible if I didn’t get the high rings and have the whole thing sitting on a 20moa base. With high rings I have about a half inch clearance to the barrel so it’d be really close with the medium rings, not sure it’d fit. US Optics rings are pretty great but mighty expensive. Talley, Leupold Mk 4, Nightforce all make 34mm rings that are a bit thinner at the top and might be less of a visibility issue and more reasonably priced. I’m not unhappy with my rings, I just picked the wrong height so I have to change some things. Soon I’ll replace the rings with the medium height or I could just rip off the 20MOA base and put a flat 2-piece picatinny base set. That’ll pull it down a quarter inch and make things more ergonomic.

    • ballisticxlr says : is free browser based app but has a large number of restrictions and caveats and doesn’t render correctly in all browsers. is where to get QuickLoad which is much more sophisticated simulation software. I do not use internal ballistics software day to day as all it provides is pressure data which is not useful unless I’m going off the reservation doing wildcatting.

    First of all I want to thank you for the amount of time and effort you put in to providing these spreadsheets. In particular, I am using your Ballistic_XLR V8.17. I love it. However, one thing I notice, on the Primary Functions worksheet, Full Humidity Adjustment columns are empty. When I click on one of the cells, I don’t see any excel formula. Would this be something that you can provide?

      Humidity is left to manual effort for a variety of reasons not the least is humidity variations contribute microscopic differences at huge distances and only with major changes in humidity from that of the baseline used to derive your starting DOPE. For 99.9% of long range shooters it is something you can safely completely ignore since the humidity baseline used in the back end of BallisticXLR is smack in the middle of the reasonable range one might expect to shoot in. For shooters with a distinct requirement for humidity due to mission parameters I will custom make one for free for currently serving U.S. military snipers. Civilian shooters can get that service as well if their mission profile dictates that it is actually necessary (certain hunting pursuits and specific competition events) in my sole judgement. The sporting shooter will not need to care at all until after 1000m and then it’ll be something like 1 click for every 200m beyond 1000m given a change from the baseline 58% to 100% and something like 1 click for every 800m for a change from baseline 58% to 20% given a rifle of sufficient power and efficiency to make it to 1800m supersonic. For guns that run out of steam earlier like 175gn .308’s, it’s arguably a completely wasted effort to bother at all as the total difference is 1 clicks from 58% to either of 20% or 100%, both of which are going to be well inside group dispersion.

    hi, I have a sharps 1862 45/110 black powder paper cartridge. is there anything you can recommend for scope and then the ballistics for the round? The bullet is a sharps bullet with a 520 and 540 grain bullet I mold both as well as a 480 grain. Anything you can recommend is great. I do not care about being period accurate I want a real scope . The rifle is extremely accurate at 500 and I know many have taken it well beyond 1500 yards but I cannot see that far lol. I am hunting Montana and hopefully Alaska moose, elk and bear next year. This is my only choice for rifle, I am disabled vet and cannot afford a different platform. This was a family gift to me. Thanks for anything you can do.

      I can happily provide you with ballistics info. For an optic, you’re going to need huge elevation capability and mild magnification. Might look into an SWFA 6×42 or a fixed 4x Leupold VX1/2/3. I’d probably pick up the Leupold VX1 if you can swing it. It’s not expensive and does a great job. Find one in 3x or 4x fixed magnification. I have some ballistic coefficient info on paper patched .45cal bullets but I’ll need your muzzle velocity and the elevation you plan to hunt at to make you some decent tables.
